Science Activity Week 2

This is the science activity that I put together. It is a science project where students would use a temperature probe to look at the temperature differences as water freezes, cools, and boils. It was a lot of fun to put together, and I hope you enjoy it!

Science Activity Week 1

In the Science Activity that I will be doing is for students to have the opportunity to predict, observe, and graph the changes in temperature in three different experiments. The three experiments are observing water freezing in the freezer, the temperature changes of water in the fridge, and water heating on the stove. This will be done using digital temperature probes.

The content that I will cover in this project is:
1st Grade Content Core

Standard 3 - Students will develop an understanding of their environment.

Objective 2 - Investigate water and interactions of water.

a. Observe and measure characteristics of water as a solid and liquid.

The pedagogy that I will cover in this project is that students will first predict what they think will happen as the water freezes in the freezer, cools in the fridge, and heats on the stove, and the difference in temperature between solidified, cooled, and heated water. The students will then observe what happens to the temperature of the water as it solidifies into ice in the freezer, as water cools in the refrigerator, and as water heats on the stove by measuring the temperature difference in set time increments. The students will then record the temperature differences of the three different experiments in increments on separate chart. Last, the students will chart the temperatures of the three experiments on one chart and make observations about the differences in temperatures over time in groups.

The technology that the students will use are digital temperature probes to measure on the computer the temperature of the water in the three experiments, to be used over a span of time in increments, and then graph the changes in temperature on a line chart in groups.

I also looked at 3 Google Earth Tours of some of my classmates. I looked at Ashley's blog about human settlements and geography which was very inventive and showed a lot of good places in the United States. I also looked at Ashley Daley's Google Tour about different settlements in the world. I liked how this showed areas outside of the U.S. to expand students ideas. Last I looked at Malorie's Google Tour about New Zealand. I really thought this was a good use of the tools and variability given to you in Google Earth.

I will be creating a Google Earth Tour about 4 biomes of the world.

Content: It coordinates with the 3rd grade Social Studies core curriculum:

Standard 1: (Students will understand how geography influences community location and development)

Objective 2: (Describe how various communities have adapted to existing environments and how other communities have modified the environment.),

Section a: (Describe the major world ecosystems (i.e. desert, plain, tropic, tundra, grassland, mountain, forest, wetland).)

I thought that this would be an interesting topic to use in Google Earth because there are many articles and connections to people's videos and pictures. It also gives students the opportunity to look at the size of mountains, and the makeup of the wetlands or a desert.

Pedagogy: This is the opportunity of students to use guided discovery learning, and to learn from outside sources like the internet and videos. This fits well with the content because it can give the opportunity for discovery and allowing the content to come alive. It can also connect to previous schemas of the student's if they have visited some of the places that are marked.

Technology: The technology that I'm using are things like Wikipedia, YouTube, websites, and pictures that help to demonstrate the differences in the different biomes. This gives students the opportunity to explore the ideas and areas on their own, and to build their knowledge of biomes, and technology.

Last, look at some of the photos on the Everglades National Park website that shows the pictures of this area.
