Internet Safety Reflection

The article that I chose to read was a New Era Article Questions & Answers about reading good media, and what you should do when you come across bad media, in this case specifically talking about books. It talks about keeping your standards high, and not compromising them for anything.

I watched videos on predators and cyber bullying. There is a video that I once saw on Dateline about cyber bullying and a scenario that they set up, it was really interesting. I watched videos on Frontline about a student that killed himself after a case of cyber bullying. This was incredibly tragic, and could have been prevented. I really feel like I learned the importance of being aware of what children are doing when they are on the internet. Helping them know that they can come to you with problems, and having an open relationship where you can help them know the dangers on the internet, what is appropriate and what is not.

The youth that I talked to is a friend of mine from Kansas City. He was already very aware of many of the things that I talked to him about internet safety. He knew that he should stay away from unsafe situations by not putting private information on the internet. He makes sure that his facebook is locked so that only those whom he chooses to see it can, and only puts up information that he knows would be alright for the whole world to see. I talked to him about making sure that his parents knew if something was going on that he didn't think was appropriate, and keeping his computer in a visual area where everyone could see it. Nothing really surprised me about his reaction. He seemed to know a lot about it, but he thought that it wasn't something to worry about. He has been taught a lot in this area. I think that what we talked about will help him be more aware of what happens on the internet because he's had to think about it again, even though its been exposed to him before.
